Traffic on the city's main artery Mount Road was blocked
for two hours from 10 a.m. onwards, disrupting office goers.
As many as 10,000 people are said to have been stuck on
Chennai roads this morning, traffic police sources said,
resulting in a loss of 20,000 man-hours.
The opposition DMK accused Tamil Nadu's ruling AIADMK of
bogus voting in the by-elections to two Chennai wards. A
furious AIADMK denied the allegations and hit back.
Road blocks and protests led to the arrest of DMK leaders M.K.
Stalin, Arcot N. Veerasamy, Parithi Ilamvazhuthi and J.
Anbazhagan and 400 other workers in the Gopalapuram area of
the city.
AIADMK leader
Valarmathi led the protest against the DMK's "attempt to
disrupt the poll process" and was in turn taken into custody
along with about 100 supporters.
Near Greams Road, AIADMK supporters were led by legislator
Sekar Babu who blocked the road. An AIADMK councillor's
vehicle was also burnt by protesting mobs.
