Saturday, January 8, 2005 (Chennai):

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa has proposed the construction of a sea wall along the Tamil Nadu coastline.

Apart from seeking relief of Rs 4,800 crore and 54,000 metric tons of rice, the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister has called for the construction of the sea wall along the state's vulnerable 1076 kilometre coastline from Chennai to Kanyakumari.

Jayalalithaa made the suggestion to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during his visit to Chennai on Friday.

"I have made a special request for the construction of a sea wall along the entire coastline of Tamil Nadu," said Jayalalithaa.

Promises to the needy

It's a massive project that is estimated to cost Rs 5,000 crore.

Jayalalithaa says the Prime Minister is examining the possibility of taking a loan from the World Bank or the Asian Development Bank for this purpose.

"We recognise that 90 per cent of those affected are fishermen and they need assistance in terms of boats, fishing nets and housing. We will do our duty to help them," said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

The onus is now on the Centre to put its money where its promises are.
