Thursday, February 17, 2005 (New Delhi):

The political debate over the demolitions being carried out by the Vilasrao Deshmukh government in Maharashtra has now shifted to Delhi.

Congress President Sonia Gandhi has summoned Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh to the Capital for discussions over the issue.

Mumbai's largest clean up drive has razed over 90,000 hutments in the state already.

Today Congress MPs from Mumbai also met at AICC General Secretary Margaret Alva's house to protest against the drive.

"I have seen women and children crying. I think the chief minister should handle this sensitively," said Govinda, MP, Congress.

Political crisis

The Congress leadership is also worried about the impact of the demolitions on the party's base.

The issue not only threatens to anger a very large vote bank, but is also creating a rift between the NCP and the Congress.

"I do not wish to say anything about the NCP. They are allies of the government. There has been high-handedness during the demolition by the police and it is the NCP which has the home portfolio," said Margaret Alva, Congress in-charge of Maharashtra.

However, Vilasrao has said that a final decision will be taken after Sonia Gandhi discussed the issue with party MPs and MLAs.
