Wednesday, February 23,
2005 (Jammu-Srinagar Highway):
Armed Forces personnel are having to battle not only up to 70
feet of snow on the border in Jammu and Kashmir, they're also
turning out to be lifesavers for many a civilian.
For the past few days, soldiers have been moving in more than
five feet of snow, rescuing villagers and providing food to
stranded passengers on the highway.
"We would have died of hunger. Yesterday, we got the food all
the way from Kud and today the army is providing us food,"
said Inderjit Singh, stranded driver.
So far the army has rescued more than 200 civilians who were
trapped by the snow.
And avalanche rescue operations are on at six different
places in Doda, Udhampur and Poonch districts of Jammu and
Kashmir.
Battling nature
The Army is trying hard to reach remote villages. They fear
that's where most of the casualties may have occurred in the
unusually high snowfall this year.
"Our top priority is to see that we save as many lives as
possible and wherever people have not had food or they are
having problems with clothing and all, we will provide them
whatever we have and wherever the houses have collapsed we
have set up temporary camps," said Lt Gen Hari Prasad, GoC,
Nothern Command.
It is the biggest rescue operation in the state launched by
the Army and they will have to work for some more days before
this job is over.
