Chennai Corporation Team works totally tirelessly and kind of throughout the daylight hours to clear the city waste – all only with Human Resources. Providing livelihood for many many poor citizens, who could have other become homeless, now live with dignity with the job at Chennai Corporation. The employees are deployed on compactors and tricycles from 6.30 p.m to 1.30 p.m. Chennai Corporation team works in conservancy operations between 6.30 a.m to 10.30 a.m and 2.30 p.m to 5.00 p.m. There is also a night conservancy operation that works between 9.00 p.m to 2.00 a.m. All workers are assigned to one of these three operations and are at task to clear 68% residential waste, 16% Commercial Waste, 14% waste from Marriage Halls, Schools and other Institutions and 2% Industrial waste. All waste cleared by Greater Chennai Corporation workers are inventoried in a transfer station for further processing by a private firm (at the moment is Ramky Enviro Engineers) and then the final disposal into the city dump yard.

The final destinations of the city solid waste are the two dumping grounds – The Kodungaiyur and the Perungudi grounds. The Kodungaiyur site, operational for close to 30 years now, is about 200 acres and handles about 2100 to 2300 Metric Tonnes of city debris each day. The Perungudi Ground operation for about 25 years is also about 200 acres and handles close to 2200 tonnes to 2400 metric tones of city debris each day. This does not include the construction debris that is generated daily in the city.
