Yercaud: Chennai's Easy Hill Weekend

Yercaud sits at 1,515 metres in the Shevaroy hills above Salem, and the road up has 20 hairpin bends, according to the Ministry of Tourism’s Utsav listing. From Chennai, the usual plan is a train to Salem Junction and a short bus or taxi ride up the ghat. The Salem district administration puts the station about 35 km from the hill town.

It is often called the poor man’s Ooty, and the district uses the phrase itself. Unlike Ooty and Kodaikanal, Yercaud has not been under the High Court’s e-pass regime for tourist vehicles, which makes it a simpler weekend for Chennai families who do not want to apply for passes.

Getting there from Chennai

  • Train: Salem Junction is on the main Chennai to Coimbatore line, served by many daytime and overnight trains from Chennai Central, including the Coimbatore Vande Bharat. Check IRCTC for current timings.
  • Bus up the hill: the district says regular buses run between Salem and Yercaud, and Salem’s bus stand connects onwards to Chennai.
  • Road: Tamil Nadu Tourism puts Yercaud about 28 km by road from Salem town. The ghat road is narrow in places; drive up in daylight and use low gear on the way down.
  • Air: the Utsav listing puts Salem airport about 50 km away; the district names Bengaluru and Coimbatore as the nearest major airports.

What to see

The district page lists the main sights, most within a few kilometres of the lake:

Place What the district says
Big Lake Natural lake with boating, 9 am to 5.30 pm
Anna Park Beside the lake; venue of the May flower show
Lady’s, Gent’s and Children’s Seats Rock viewpoints over the plains
Pagoda Point About 5 km from town, views of Attur side
Killiyur Falls About 3 km from the lake, best after the monsoon
Shevaroyan Temple Cave temple, 6 am to 8 pm
Botanical Survey of India garden Plant collection and orchidarium

The district notes that the lake is the only natural one among the hill-station lakes of the south. The Botanical Survey of India garden is a quieter stop, and the government horticulture farm sells saplings, a handy souvenir for a Chennai balcony garden. The silk farm and rose garden, about 2 km from town, show how silk is produced.

A short history

The Utsav listing says the name comes from yeri-kaadu, lake forest. It credits Sir Thomas Munro, Governor of Madras, with the British discovery of the hills, and the Salem collector David Cockburn with developing the station between 1820 and 1829, introducing the coffee that still grows on the slopes alongside oranges, pepper and jackfruit. The highest point, Shevaroyan peak, rises to 1,620 metres.

When to go

The Utsav listing gives temperatures of 13 to 30 degrees Celsius through the year and says about 20 lakh tourists visit annually. The busiest time is the summer festival and flower show in May; in 2026 the 49th edition was extended to 31 May, the Salem collectorate announced. Book rooms well ahead for that week.

October to December brings northeast monsoon rain to the Eastern Ghats. The falls are at their best, but mist and wet bends make the ghat road slower, and landslips occasionally close stretches for a few hours. Pack a light woollen layer for evenings in any season.

A sample weekend

  1. Friday night: overnight train from Chennai Central to Salem Junction.
  2. Saturday: bus or taxi up the ghat early, boating on the lake, Anna Park, and sunset at Lady’s Seat.
  3. Sunday: Pagoda Point and the Shevaroyan temple in the morning, Killiyur Falls if the path is safe, then back down to Salem for an evening train home.

Practical tips

  • Weekends are crowded at the lake and viewpoints. A Friday night train and Saturday morning ride up beats the Sunday traffic.
  • Many viewpoints have steep edges with low railings. Keep children close.
  • Carry cash; card acceptance is patchy at small stalls.
  • Mobile signal can drop on parts of the ghat road and at the outer viewpoints, so download maps and save hotel phone numbers before you start the climb.
  • The Salem tourist office is in Room 217 of the Collectorate, Salem, phone 0427-2416449, per the Utsav listing.
  • The Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation has listed a three-day Yercaud and Hogenakkal seasonal tour from Chennai, according to its RTI handbook, if you prefer a package.
