Vandalur’s Arignar Anna Zoological Park has recently received two Himalayan black bears and two leopard cats from Jammu’s, Jambu Zoo as part of an inter-zoo exchange. The animals are now in a mandatory 21-day quarantine, while the veterinary team watches feeding patterns, behaviour, and general health.
Zoos “exchange” animals usually keeping in mind about long-term population health rather than visitor novelty. A zoo that keeps breeding within a closed group generaly risks inbreeding and weaker genetics over time. Exchanges help refresh gene pools and support breeding programmes that are managed across institutions.
The transit itself was treated as a serious operation. Reporting says the animals travelled by train in an additional coach arranged for the move, with staff monitoring them during the journey.
One detail has caught attention because it is rare for regular Chennai zoo-goers: leopard cats are returning to Vandalur after a long gap, reported as more than two decades.
This exchange is not one-sided. Reports say Vandalur will send a pair of hippos to Jammu as part of the same arrangement, and that the transfer includes staff guidance on hippo care and enclosure management.
For visitors, the immediate takeaway is simple: don’t expect to see the new animals right away. Quarantine is there for a reason. Once the zoo clears them for display, you’ll likely see a phased introduction into enclosures rather than a sudden “now open” moment.
