Basketball in Chennai: Nationals, City League and How to Play

Tamil Nadu's men took silver at the 2026 Senior Nationals in Chennai. How the city league, institutional teams and 3x3 events feed the state side.

Chennai basketball: league to nationals

Chennai hosted the 75th Senior National Basketball Championship from 4 to 11 January 2026 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, and Tamil Nadu’s men finished runners-up to Indian Railways, according to the Basketball Federation of India’s event page. The state’s women’s team took third place behind Railways and Kerala.

Basketball in Chennai runs on a layered system: school and college teams, a district league dominated by institutional sides such as banks, railways and the police, and a state team picked from those players. This guide sets out how that ladder works, where the game’s local history sits, and what a young player or a returning adult can do to get on court.

Tamil Nadu’s recent record at national level

The January 2026 silver was not a one-off. In April 2022, also at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium, Tamil Nadu’s men beat Punjab 87-69 to win the senior national title, DT Next reported. A. Aravind top-scored with 25 points that night and H. Muin Bek captained the side.

Tamil Nadu has also played club basketball abroad. Entered as India’s national champions, a Tamil Nadu side won the South Asian Basketball Association (SABA) Club Championship in April 2025 without losing a game, beating sides from Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Nepal and the Maldives by wide margins, and qualified for the FIBA West Asia Super League for the second year running, The Bridge reported.

Event Where Tamil Nadu result
Senior Nationals, April 2022 Chennai Men won the title
SABA Club Championship, April 2025 South Asia regional event Won, unbeaten in four games
75th Senior Nationals, January 2026 Chennai Men second, women third

The game also has a political profile in the state now. The federation’s website lists Aadhav Arjuna as BFI president, and its September 2026 news item on the 51st Sub-Junior Nationals in Vijayawada describes him as Tamil Nadu’s Sports Minister. That tournament, held from 28 September to 4 October 2026, drew 54 teams and more than 640 players, the BFI site says.

The city league and its institutional teams

Below the state team sits the league run by the Chennai District Basketball Association (CDBA). A Sportskeeda report on one revived edition, sponsored by Indian Overseas Bank and played for the Ponnappa Nadar Trophy, describes a two-level format with ten teams in each level. That edition was opened by R. Ilango, then secretary of the Tamil Nadu Basketball Association, and the report said the city league was returning after a gap of nearly two decades.

The team list explains how the sport survives in Chennai. Level I in that season included:

  • Employers: BSNL, Customs, ICF, Indian Bank, IOB, Southern Railway, State Bank and the Tamil Nadu State Police
  • Clubs and colleges: Gopalapuram BC and Sathyabama BBC

Level II mixed neighbourhood clubs such as Anna Nagar BBC, Raghavendra BBC and St. Peter’s BBC with Chennai Port, Metropolitan Transport, TNEB and a sports hostel team. Public-sector employers have long recruited players through sports quotas. For a young player, getting noticed by one of these teams is often the realistic route to playing senior basketball.

Where the local history starts

The YMCA College of Physical Education at 497 Anna Salai, Nandanam, was founded in 1920 by Harry Crowe Buck, whom the college describes as a pioneer of physical education training in India. The college still runs a sports higher secondary school and offers game subscriptions to the public, according to its website.

Chennai also has a link to the top of the professional game. Sonia Raman, appointed head coach of the WNBA’s Seattle Storm in October 2025, has a father from Chennai, DT Next noted. She coached at MIT from 2008 to 2020 and was an assistant with the NBA’s Memphis Grizzlies before the move, and became the first person of Indian descent to lead a WNBA team.

3×3 basketball and the national age-group ladder

For the half-court, three-a-side game, BFI now runs 3×3 categories for under-17 and under-18 boys and girls as well as senior men and women. The federation has also sought an organising partner for a National Star Basketball 3×3 League, according to a tender notice on its site. Because 3×3 needs only one hoop, it suits neighbourhood courts.

The 5×5 age-group pathway runs through sub-junior, junior and senior national championships. The 76th Junior Nationals were held in Puducherry from 22 to 29 May 2026, the BFI calendar shows. State teams for these events are picked through trials and district competitions run under the state association.

How to start playing in Chennai

  1. School and college teams first. Most players are spotted in inter-school and inter-collegiate tournaments. Ask your school’s PE teacher which district events the team enters.
  2. Join a club that enters the district league. Neighbourhood clubs like those in the CDBA’s second level take younger players and give match experience against institutional sides.
  3. Watch for trials. State selection trials and sports hostel admissions are announced by the state association and the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu; check their notices rather than social media posts.
