The Tamil Nadu Cricket Association’s First Division League is the oldest and toughest club competition in the state, and its title still carries the Rajah of Palayampatti Shield. In the 2026 edition, MRC ‘A’ reached the final after drawing Qualifier 1 against Globe Trotters on 27 April and edging them on first-innings lead, 400 to 385, DT Next reported. Jolly Rovers moved into Qualifier 2 after a 79-run first-innings lead over Nelson in the eliminator.
For most Chennai cricketers, this league is where a career is made or lost. TNPL contracts, Ranji Trophy places and IPL trials all draw on what players do across these long weekends of multi-day cricket. Here is how it works.
How the league is played
- Multi-day, two-innings cricket. Matches run over several days with overs counted per innings, closer to Ranji Trophy than to T20.
- Points. An outright win is worth 6 points, as shown in the June 2026 round reported by DT Next.
- First-innings lead matters. When a match is drawn, the side ahead on the first innings advances in knockouts, as MRC ‘A’ and Jolly Rovers did in 2026.
- Knockout format. The 2026 playoffs used a qualifier, eliminator and second qualifier ahead of the final. In 2019-20 the league used semi-finals at the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium, DT Next noted.
Clubs in the First Division
Teams named in 2026 match reports include MRC ‘A’, Globe Trotters, Jolly Rovers, Nelson SC, Vijay CC, Young Stars, Grand Slam CC, SKM CC, Swaraj CC, Singam Puli, Sea Hawks and Pristine CC. Several are backed by companies. Vijay CC is promoted by India Cements and Jolly Rovers is a Chemplast Sanmar side, Madras Musings noted in 2022.
Below the First Division sit lower divisions with promotion and relegation. MRC ‘A’ climbed from the Fourth Division in 2015-16 to the First Division by 2018-19, the same article records.
A short history
Mylapore Recreation Club’s ‘A’ team first entered the league in 1932, when it was run by the Indian Cricket Federation, a forerunner of the Madras Cricket Association formed a couple of years later, according to Madras Musings. MRC ‘A’ won the shield, or its equivalent then, seven times between 1932-33 and 1947-48, matching its old rival Triplicane Cricket Club in the first decade.
The modern era has been dominated by corporate teams. When MRC ‘A’ won the First Division in 2021-22, its first TNCA First Division title, the side was led by R. Ashwin and coached by VRS Guru Kedarnath, DT Next reported. The club had been bought by Take Solutions in 2015 and had narrowly avoided relegation in 2019-20.
Why it matters for players
| Next step | How the league feeds it |
|---|---|
| Tamil Nadu Premier League | Franchises draft from players who perform in TNCA cricket |
| Tamil Nadu Ranji and age-group sides | State selectors watch league scores and wickets |
| IPL scouting | Trial invitations often follow strong league and TNPL seasons |
| Company jobs | Corporate-backed clubs have historically offered employment to players |
Big names still turn out. In a June 2026 round, left-arm spinner Mohana Prasath took 14 wickets for 72 runs in Grand Slam’s two-wicket win over SKM CC, and B. Sachin, the 2026 TNPL’s top scorer, made a century for Sea Hawks, DT Next reported.
How to get into league cricket
- Join a registered club. Clubs register players with the TNCA each season; ask a club in your area about trials. Lower-division clubs are usually the realistic starting point.
- Play district and age-group cricket. TNCA runs age-group tournaments that feed state squads.
- Keep your registration current. Players can turn out for only one club per season in the league.
- Watch for announcements on the TNCA website, which carries fixtures, tournament notices and contact details for the association at Chepauk.
Watching a match
League games are played at grounds around the city and at Chepauk. Entry to most league matches is free and crowds are small, which makes them a good way to see future state players up close. Fixture lists are published by the TNCA; match reports appear in local sports pages.
