Route 583 is one of Chennai’s most economically significant bus routes — connecting Tambaram directly to Sriperumbudur, where one of India’s most important manufacturing clusters is located. The corridor passes through Padappai and Oragadam Road, linking to the Sriperumbudur SEZ where major factories including Foxconn (Apple iPhone assembly), Samsung, Hyundai, and hundreds of component suppliers operate.

For tens of thousands of factory workers who live in Tambaram, Perungalathur, Padappai, and the Mudichur belt, Route 583 is the primary commuter bus to work. At 39.6 km, it is one of the longer MTC routes operating out of Tambaram.

Key Stop Context

Tambaram New Terminus (Stop 1): Southern Chennai’s major bus interchange. Connects to all MTC city routes, suburban rail, and SETC/TNSTC mofussil services. Note: the New Terminus is separate from Tambaram West — verify the correct boarding point.

Padappai (Stop 8): Midpoint of the route and the largest town on the corridor. Many factory workers from the Sriperumbudur SEZ live here.

Oragadam Koot Road (Stop 14): Junction for the Oragadam Industrial Corridor — home to Hyundai, Renault-Nissan, Daimler India Commercial Vehicles, and dozens of auto-component manufacturers. Passengers for Oragadam factories alight here.

Sriperumbudur (Stop 21): Terminus at the Sriperumbudur bus stand. The Foxconn/Apple facility, Samsung factory, and main SEZ gate are approximately 3–6 km from the bus stand. Shared autos and company buses serve the final stretch.

Traveller Tips

Factory commuters: Route 583 is the cheapest option to the Sriperumbudur SEZ from Tambaram. The full-route ordinary fare of Rs 17 compares very favourably against shared autos (Rs 60–100) for the same distance.

Last stop vs factory gate: Sriperumbudur bus stand is in the town centre. Most factories are 3–7 km further inside the SEZ. Shared autos to factory gates are the standard onward mode.

Frequency advisory: At one bus every 18 minutes on average, Route 583 has a wider gap than urban routes. During evening shift-end periods (5 PM–7 PM), buses from Sriperumbudur toward Tambaram can be crowded — board one stop earlier at Pattunool Chatram to secure a seat.
