Mount Road & Central Chennai

The Mount Road (Anna Salai) corridor is Chennai’s oldest commercial spine and still home to some of its most historic shopping destinations. These malls are best reached by metro (Green Line) or MTC bus.

Spencer Plaza

Spencer Plaza is the oldest major mall in Chennai — it predates the modern mall era and has a character entirely its own. Spread across three phases on Anna Salai, it is less a polished retail destination and more a dense, labyrinthine bazaar under a roof. That is not a criticism. For specific things — handloom textiles, leather bags, Kashmiri handicrafts, silver jewellery, and offbeat boutiques — Spencer Plaza has no rival in the city. The building itself has a striking atrium, and the older Phase I section has genuine architectural character. It is not the place to go for international brands or food courts; it is the place to go when you know what you want and want to compare 20 versions of it.

Parsn Complex

Parsn Complex is primarily a commercial building on Anna Salai with a retail component on the lower floors. It is useful as a pitstop for services — banks, courier offices, travel agencies — rather than as a shopping destination in its own right. Its central location on Mount Road makes it a convenient landmark.

Century Plaza

Century Plaza sits on Anna Salai and houses a combination of retail stores, offices, and service providers. It is a practical stop for residents of Teynampet and the surrounding areas but not a destination shopping complex.

Egmore

Egmore is a transitional zone — part commercial, part residential, and home to Chennai’s main railway terminus for Southern routes. The malls here tend to cater to middle-budget shoppers and serve the large population that passes through the area daily.

Alsa Mall

Alsa Mall is a compact, busy complex near Egmore Railway Station that serves the transit crowd well. It is not premium by any measure, but it punches above its weight for mobile accessories, budget clothing, and quick purchases. The ground floor has a good concentration of mobile phone and electronics shops. Because of its proximity to the station, it gets consistent footfall from travellers and is reliably open on public holidays.

Fountain Plaza

Fountain Plaza is Chennai’s go-to for electronics and computer hardware in the Egmore belt. It functions less like a mall and more like a specialised electronics bazaar — multiple competing shops on the same floor selling similar goods, which makes it a good place to compare prices on laptops, peripherals, hard drives, and mobile accessories. If you are coming specifically for tech, the staff here tend to be more knowledgeable than in larger generalist malls.

Kakani Towers

Kakani Towers is primarily an office and services complex with retail on the lower floors. It is convenient for the surrounding Egmore and Park Town localities but not a standalone shopping destination.

Challa Mall

Challa Mall is a neighbourhood-serving complex in Egmore with a mix of budget retail, tailoring, and everyday services. It is useful for local residents but not typically a reason to travel across the city.

Nungambakkam

Nungambakkam is one of Chennai’s more affluent inner-city neighbourhoods, and its shopping complexes reflect that — smaller, quieter, and leaning toward boutiques and premium services rather than high-volume retail.

Ispahani Centre

Ispahani Centre is understated by Chennai mall standards — no multiplex, no food court anchors, no giant brand signs — and that is exactly its appeal. It has a calm, unhurried atmosphere and a mix of premium independent boutiques, jewellers, salons, and lifestyle stores that do not exist in the big malls. The outdoor-facing design lets in natural light and air, making it one of the more pleasant environments to browse in. For jewellery shopping in particular — especially for bespoke or semi-custom pieces — several of the jewellers here are worth a visit.

Shyam’s Garden

Shyam’s Garden is a small, low-key complex in Nungambakkam that caters to the local residential crowd. It has a handful of clothing boutiques, a salon or two, and service outlets. Not a destination on its own, but worth knowing about if you are in the area.

Elcanso

Elcanso is a compact complex in Nungambakkam with a mix of clothing boutiques and accessories shops. Like many neighbourhood complexes in this part of Chennai, it serves the surrounding residential area rather than drawing visitors from elsewhere.

Cisons Complex

Cisons Complex is a mid-size mixed-use building in Nungambakkam housing retail outlets, offices, and service providers. It is a practical neighbourhood resource and a useful landmark on Nungambakkam High Road.

Mylapore, RA Puram & South-Central

This stretch covers some of Chennai’s most culturally rich residential neighbourhoods. Shopping here tends to lean toward traditional wear, jewellery, and mid-range lifestyle — with Citi Centre as the main modern mall anchor.

Citi Centre

Citi Centre is the main mall for the Mylapore, RA Puram, and Mandaveli belt — a neighbourhood that has historically been underserved by large retail. It has a PVR multiplex, a reasonable selection of mid-range fashion and accessories brands, a food court, and a supermarket. It is not as large or as well-stocked as Express Avenue or Phoenix Market City, but its location is unbeatable for South Chennai residents who do not want to travel to Royapettah or Velachery. The cinema in particular gets strong weekday footfall from the surrounding residential areas.

T Nagar

T Nagar is Chennai’s undisputed shopping capital — a neighbourhood where every square metre is retail, and the density of silk sari shops, jewellers, and textile showrooms is unlike anywhere else in South India. The malls here are secondary to the street-level shopping culture, but they provide useful air-conditioned relief.

BBC Plaza

BBC Plaza is embedded in the T Nagar shopping belt and reflects that environment — heavy on textiles, ethnic wear, and traditional clothing. It is a practical stop within a T Nagar shopping day, particularly for ready-made salwars, kurtis, and accessories at accessible prices.

Maya Plaza

Maya Plaza sits within walking distance of Panagal Park and the T Nagar textile cluster. It caters to the same crowd as the surrounding street shops — visitors looking for ethnic wear, jewellery, and accessories during festival and wedding seasons. Useful as part of a broader T Nagar shopping trip.

Kilpauk

Kilpauk is a quieter residential area north of Anna Salai. Its shopping complexes serve the local population and are especially useful for electronics and everyday services.

Prince Plaza

Prince Plaza is Kilpauk’s electronics hub — a multi-floor complex with competing electronics and IT hardware shops that is well-known among buyers of computers, laptops, components, and mobile phones. The competitive pricing from multiple adjacent vendors makes it worth visiting if you are buying tech and want to compare deals without going to Ritchie Street.

Wellington Plaza

Wellington Plaza is a neighbourhood complex serving Kilpauk and the surrounding areas. It has a mix of budget clothing shops, tailoring units, and service outlets. Functional rather than destination-worthy.

Kodambakkam & West Chennai

Kodambakkam is home to Chennai’s Tamil film industry and has a distinct commercial character. Its malls are practical neighbourhood resources.

Rainbow Plaza

Rainbow Plaza in Kodambakkam is a compact electronics-focused complex popular with the local residential and film industry crowd. Like Fountain Plaza in Egmore, it has multiple competing mobile and electronics shops that make price comparison easy. Useful for Kodambakkam, Vadapalani, and K K Nagar residents who do not want to travel to Ritchie Street or Express Avenue.

Park Town, Broadway & North Central

This is one of Chennai’s oldest commercial zones, centred around the wholesale markets of Broadway. Shopping here is functional and trade-oriented — fabrics, textiles, and traditional goods dominate.

Hameedia

Hameedia is an institution for fabric shopping in Chennai, particularly for men’s formal suiting fabric and traditional textiles. It has been trading for decades and has a loyal base among customers who come specifically for the fabric selection and tailoring services. It functions more like a traditional textile house than a modern mall, which is precisely why regulars keep coming back.

Raahat Plaza

Raahat Plaza is a mid-size complex in the Thousand Lights area with a mix of budget fashion, leather accessories, and everyday retail. It serves the dense residential population of the surrounding areas and is conveniently located near the Thousand Lights signal on Anna Salai.

Adyar & South Chennai

Adyar is one of Chennai’s most established residential areas, and its shopping infrastructure reflects the demands of a settled, mid-to-upper income neighbourhood. Kasi Arcade is the main complex here.

Kasi Arcade

Kasi Arcade is Adyar’s primary neighbourhood shopping complex — a practical, well-used space that anchors the Gandhi Nagar commercial strip. It has a supermarket, clothing and accessories shops, a food section, salons, and various services. It is not a destination mall, but for Adyar, Kotturpuram, and Thiruvanmiyur residents it is a reliable stop for everyday needs and moderately priced shopping without the drive to a larger mall.

Velachery

Velachery has grown substantially as a residential and commercial suburb and is home to both a large mall (Phoenix Market City, covered separately) and a neighbourhood-level shopping complex.

City Centre

City Centre in Velachery is a neighbourhood-serving mall that fills a different role from Phoenix Market City nearby — it is less about brand shopping and more about practical, everyday retail. It has a supermarket, clothing and accessories shops, a food section, and some services. For Velachery residents who do not want the scale and crowds of Phoenix, City Centre is the more convenient regular stop.
