Tamil Nadu 3% Sports Quota in Government Jobs: Rules and Applying

Three percent of identified government posts go to sportspersons. The rules, eligible events, age limit and how SDAT takes applications.

The 3% sports quota for government jobs

Tamil Nadu sets aside 3 percent of vacancies in identified government posts for meritorious sportspersons, and the quota sits outside the usual communal reservation roster so that athletes can be appointed faster. The rule comes from G.O.(Ms) No. 6 of 20 February 2019, and was refined by G.O.(Ms) No. 43 of 28 November 2019, which also raised the upper age limit for these appointments to 40.

The quota applies to posts in government departments and to public sector undertakings, and the copy list of the order includes TNPSC, the Uniformed Services Recruitment Board and the Teachers Recruitment Board. Here is who qualifies, how the selection works and how to apply when SDAT calls for applications.

How the 3 percent quota works

  • Three percent of total vacancies in the identified posts are reserved for sportspersons; the other 97 percent follow the normal rotation.
  • A Selection Committee prepares a merit list of eligible sportspersons. Higher achievement ranks higher.
  • No communal reservation is applied within the sports quota.
  • The maximum age is relaxed to 40 years.

In direct recruitment through TNPSC, the commission has applied the rule to category III posts when a unit reports 33 or more vacancies, as in its 2021 addendum for agricultural and horticultural officer posts. Each recruitment notice says whether the quota applies, so read the notification.

Which achievements count

When SDAT last called for applications, in October 2023, it accepted achievements on or after 1 January 2018 at three levels:

Level Events Who qualifies
International Olympics, Commonwealth Games, Asian Games, Paralympics, Asian Para Games, SAF Games, Deaflympics, IBSA World Games, specified World, Commonwealth and Asian Championships Medallists and participants
National National Games and National Championships of federations recognised by the Sports Ministry Medallists only
State Senior State Championships of associations recognised by SDAT Medallists only

Applicants had to be natives of Tamil Nadu, meet the minimum educational qualification for the post and be no older than 40.

How to apply

  1. Watch for SDAT’s call. Applications are invited through a press release and on sdat.tn.gov.in. In 2023 the window closed on 31 October at 5 pm.
  2. Apply online by uploading the form and documents on the SDAT website, or apply in person at the SDAT head office, Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Periyamet, Chennai 600 003.
  3. Prepare documents: participation and merit certificates issued by the recognised federation or association, nativity proof, educational certificates and age proof.
  4. Follow the merit list. Shortlisted candidates are matched to posts in departments and PSUs.

The press release gave sdat@tn.gov.in as the contact email.

Common reasons applications fail

  • Unrecognised events. Medals from invitation or open tournaments, or from bodies not recognised by the Sports Ministry or SDAT, do not count.
  • Junior results. At state level, only senior championships were accepted in 2023.
  • Old achievements. Results before the cut-off date set in the call (1 January 2018 last time) were excluded.
  • Missing nativity proof. Applicants must show they are natives of Tamil Nadu, so get the certificate from the revenue office early.
  • Qualification mismatch. A medal does not replace the minimum education required for the post.

Who has been appointed

Appointments are announced in batches. In September 2025, for example, chess player R. Vaishali was appointed a junior officer at the Tamil Nadu Industrial Investment Corporation, and footballer Sumitra, basketball player Sathya and sailor Chitresh Dutta were placed at TIDCO, Tamil Nadu Cements and SIPCOT, Dinamalar reported. The report did not say how many people have been appointed under the quota in total, and we did not find an official cumulative figure.

What is changing

At a review meeting in May 2026, the new government discussed implementation of the 3 percent job reservation, IANS reported. In August, the Assembly was told the state would raise the sports quota above 3 percent for admissions to engineering, medical, law and agriculture courses, though the new share was not stated, DT Next reported. That change concerns college seats, not jobs. Watch for a fresh government order and the next SDAT call.
