Tamil Nadu had 8,15,60,472 mobile connections at the end of August 2026, according to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). That is more than one connection per resident: the state’s telephone density stood at 107.79 per 100 people in March 2026, well above the national 93.26.
TRAI does not publish Chennai separately. The city falls inside the “Tamil Nadu (including Chennai)” telecom service area, so the state figures are the closest official measure of how Chennai connects. Here is the latest data, how the four operators split the market and what it means for home broadband.
Subscribers in Tamil Nadu, August 2026
TRAI’s monthly subscription release for August 2026 gives operator-wise counts for each service area. The wireless counts include machine-to-machine SIMs, such as those in card machines and vehicle trackers.
| Operator (Tamil Nadu) | Mobile subscribers, Aug 2026 | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Bharti Airtel | 3,39,80,568 | 41.7% |
| Reliance Jio | 2,54,87,757 | 31.3% |
| Vodafone Idea | 1,42,42,659 | 17.5% |
| BSNL | 78,49,488 | 9.6% |
| Total | 8,15,60,472 | 100% |
Shares are worked out from TRAI’s counts. In Tamil Nadu, Airtel leads Jio by about 85 lakh connections, and BSNL still holds close to one in ten. The state added 3,55,114 mobile connections in August, up from 8,12,05,358 at the end of July.
Teledensity: Tamil Nadu against India
The quarterly Performance Indicators Report for January to March 2026 gives density figures, which measure connections per 100 people.
| As on 31 March 2026 | Tamil Nadu (incl. Chennai) | All India |
|---|---|---|
| Total telephone subscribers | 8.55 crore | 133.06 crore |
| Total teledensity | 107.79 | 93.26 |
| Urban teledensity | 135.98 | 151.47 |
| Rural teledensity | 72.77 | 60.46 |
| Wireline teledensity | 5.00 | 3.38 |
| Rural share of subscribers | 30.10% | 41.47% |
Two things stand out. Tamil Nadu’s rural density is well above the national figure, which reflects its high urbanisation and good tower coverage. Its urban density, though high, is lower than the national urban figure. TRAI’s report does not explain the gap, and urban and rural splits depend on how operators classify connections. A density above 100 simply means many people carry two SIMs or more.
TRAI’s state-wise table in the same report gives slightly different values (108.48 total, 137.78 urban) because it is calculated on state rather than service-area boundaries. Tamil Nadu ranks seventh of 22 service areas by total subscribers.
Home broadband: wires and 5G boxes
Wireline connections in Tamil Nadu reached 38,66,525 in August 2026, up from 38,60,707 in July. Most of these today are fibre broadband lines rather than old landlines. By operator, Airtel had 12.1 lakh, Vodafone Idea 10.7 lakh, BSNL 8.0 lakh and Tata Teleservices 7.6 lakh wireline subscribers in the state, according to TRAI’s table.
A fast-growing alternative is 5G fixed wireless access (FWA), the plug-in boxes that bring 5G into homes without a cable. Tamil Nadu had 8,87,108 5G FWA subscribers in August 2026, split between Airtel (4,56,984) and Jio (4,30,124). Jio also had 2,41,444 subscribers on its other unlicensed-band fixed wireless service.
| Home connection type, Tamil Nadu | July 2026 | August 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Wireline | 38,60,707 | 38,66,525 |
| 5G fixed wireless | 8,70,654 | 8,87,108 |
For a Chennai household choosing between the two, the practical difference is that wired fibre needs a line to the building, which many older apartment blocks and narrow lanes still lack, while a 5G box needs only good signal indoors. Ask neighbours which operators actually work on your street before signing up.
Who is actually online
Subscriber counts are connections, not people. The NFHS-5 survey asked people directly. In Tamil Nadu in 2019-21, 55.8% of women and 76.1% of men aged 15 to 49 said they had ever used the internet, and 81.2% of women had a mobile phone they used themselves. These are state figures; NFHS did not report them for Chennai district.
Nationally, TRAI’s annual data for 2025-26 counted 133.06 crore telephone subscribers at the end of March 2026, up 10.81% in a year. The quarterly performance report put the average wireless data user’s consumption at 26.70 GB a month in January to March 2026.
How to read TRAI’s numbers
- Chennai is not separate. TRAI reports the city inside the Tamil Nadu service area, labelled “incl. Chennai”. No official city figure is published.
- M2M counts inflate totals. From 2025-26 Airtel began including machine-to-machine SIMs in its wireless base, which TRAI notes causes a jump in the count.
- Complaints go to the operator first. For network or billing problems, use your operator’s complaint channel, then its appellate authority, before approaching TRAI.
