The fastest way from Chennai to the Meenakshi Amman temple is the Vande Bharat from Egmore, listed by the Railway Board to reach Madurai on its way to Nagercoil, and once inside the temple you will have to leave your phone at the gate. Since 1 September 2026, the state’s HR&CE department has required devotees at major temples to deposit mobile phones at entrance counters for a Rs 5 token, following a Madras High Court order from its Madurai Bench, Deccan Chronicle reported.
This guide covers getting there, darshan timings, the phone and dress rules, and the Chithirai festival, the one time of year when Madurai’s crowds rival any in India.
Getting there from Chennai
- Vande Bharat: the circular lists 20627 leaving Egmore at 5 am with stops at Tambaram, Villupuram, Tiruchchirappalli and Dindigul before Madurai, six days a week except Wednesdays. The return, 20628, leaves Nagercoil at 2.20 pm and calls at Madurai on the way to Egmore. Check current timings on IRCTC or NTES.
- Overnight trains: Madurai Junction is the main station, per Tamil Nadu Tourism, and several overnight expresses from Egmore and Tambaram serve it, the easiest option for a full day in the temple.
- Air: Madurai airport at Avaniyapuram has direct flights to Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Delhi, and international links to Colombo, Dubai and Singapore, according to Tamil Nadu Tourism.
- Bus: inter-city buses arrive at the Mattuthavani (MGR) and Arappalayam bus stands; the Periyar bus stand handles city buses and is closest to the temple.
Darshan timings
The Incredible India page gives a morning session from 5 am and an evening session from 4 pm to 9.30 pm. Its listed closing time for the morning session reads “2:30 AM”, which appears to be a typo; the temple usually closes around midday. Confirm on the HR&CE temple website or at the gate before planning around the afternoon.
- Free general darshan and paid special-darshan queues both operate. Paid tickets save time on weekends and festival days.
- Footwear is left at counters outside the towers.
- Dress modestly. Shorts and sleeveless tops are not appropriate.
- Large bags may not be allowed inside; travel light.
The phone rule
Deccan Chronicle described how the counters work: staff record your photograph, phone model and number, and return the phone against an acknowledgement slip. The department said the rule was meant to stop photos, videos and reels inside temples. Keep the slip safe, and agree a meeting point with family members before you go in, since you will not be able to call each other inside.
Inside the temple
Tamil Nadu Tourism notes that Madurai is called the Athens of the East for its lofty temple towers. Incredible India counts 14 gopurams, the tallest around 45 to 50 metres, and records that invading armies under Malik Kafur damaged the corridor murals in 1310, with restoration following in the 14th century. Allow at least two hours to walk the corridors, the Golden Lotus Tank, and the shrines of Meenakshi and Sundareswarar.
The Chithirai festival
Madurai’s biggest celebration falls in April to May. For 2026, the published schedule had the flag hoisting on 19 April, Meenakshi’s coronation on 26 April, the celestial wedding (Thirukalyanam) on 28 April, the car festival on 29 April and Kallazhagar entering the Vaigai on 1 May, News Today reported. Book trains and rooms 60 days ahead if you want to be there, and expect road closures around the temple and the river.
A day in Madurai
- Arrive by overnight train and go to the temple for the early morning session.
- Midday: rest, or visit the Thirumalai Nayak palace if it is open.
- Return for the evening session and the night procession of the deities to the bedchamber, which many devotees stay for.
- Catch the Vande Bharat or a night train back.
If you have a second day, the city’s other sights are within easy reach of the temple by auto, and the flower and textile markets in the streets around the four towers are at their liveliest in the morning. Madurai’s food is half the reason many Chennai visitors come back, so leave room for a late dinner near the temple.
Tamil Nadu Tourism recommends December to February. Madurai is hot most of the year, so carry water and a cap for the walk between the gopurams.
