Rameswaram from Chennai: Temple, 22 Theerthams, Dhanushkodi

Temple timings, the theertham bath, the daily Tambaram train over the new Pamban bridge, and when police close the road to Dhanushkodi.

Rameswaram: Theerthams, Temple, Land's End

The Ramanathaswamy temple in Rameswaram is open from 5 am to 1 pm and from 3 pm to 9 pm, according to the Ministry of Tourism’s Incredible India page, and the usual pilgrim routine is a dip at Agnitheertham, a bath at the 22 theerthams inside the temple, then darshan. From Chennai, the simplest way in is an overnight train that crosses the new Pamban bridge into Rameswaram station, about 1.3 km from the temple.

This guide covers the temple itself, the 18 km road to Dhanushkodi, and the practical details that catch Chennai visitors out: wet clothes, the phone counter, and sea-surge closures at the island’s tip.

Getting there from Chennai

A Railway Board circular of April 2025 introduced the daily 16103 Tambaram–Rameswaram Express, listed to leave Tambaram at 6.05 pm and reach Rameswaram at 5.45 am, with stops including Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Chidambaram, Mayiladuthurai, Thiruvarur, Karaikkudi and Ramanathapuram. The return, 16104, was listed at 3.35 pm from Rameswaram, reaching Tambaram at 3.10 am. Check NTES or IRCTC for current timings, which can change.

From Egmore, the Sethu Express (22661/22662) and the Rameswaram Express (16751/16752) also serve the island; a DT Next report from November 2025 listed both when Egmore redevelopment briefly shifted them to Tambaram. Such temporary changes recur, so look at the originating station on your ticket.

The PMIndia release on the bridge says it is 2.08 km long with 99 spans and a 72.5-metre lift span that rises up to 17 metres for ships, at a cost of over Rs 700 crore. It opened on 6 April 2025. If you fly, the district administration puts Madurai airport about 175 km away.

Inside the temple

Tamil Nadu Tourism describes 22 holy water bodies inside the complex where devotees bathe. Attendants draw water from each well and pour it over you, so come in clothes you do not mind soaking and carry a dry set in a bag. Changing rooms and cloak facilities are near the entrances.

  • The corridor: the third corridor measures 197 metres east to west and 133 metres north to south, per the Rameswaram municipality’s page, which calls it among the longest in the world. The gopuram rises about 38 metres.
  • The two lingams: the sanctum has the Ramalingam, said to have been shaped from sand by Sita, and the Vishvalingam brought by Hanuman, which is worshipped first by tradition.
  • The Nandi: Tamil Nadu Tourism gives its height as about 17.5 feet.
  • Jyotirlinga: the temple is counted among the twelve Jyotirlinga shrines.

Phones: since 1 September 2026, the HR&CE department has required devotees at major temples to deposit mobile phones at entrance counters for a Rs 5 token fee, following a Madras High Court order. Expect the same at Rameswaram and keep your ticket slip safe.

Dhanushkodi and the island

The Ramanathapuram district page places Dhanushkodi 18 km from Rameswaram by road at the southern tip of the island, and records that a cyclone washed the town away in 1964. The Kothandaramasamy temple on the way survived. Today the ruins of the church and station draw visitors who drive to the end of the road where the sea closes in from both sides.

Access is controlled when the sea turns rough. On 19 August 2026, police barricaded the new road to Dhanushkodi and turned back autos, cars and vans during a swell-surge alert, DT Next reported. During the northeast monsoon, check with the local police or the district before setting out, and do not enter the water at the tip.

Closer to town, the municipality lists Agnitheertham, a shallow stretch of sea about 100 metres in front of the temple gopuram, and the Dr APJ Abdul Kalam memorial at Pei Karumbu, less than a kilometre from town, where Kalam was buried in his home town.

Planning the visit

  1. Arrive on the morning train, check in, and do the Agnitheertham dip and theertham bath first, before the queues build.
  2. Take darshan, change, and rest through the 1 pm to 3 pm closure.
  3. Go to Dhanushkodi in the late afternoon if the road is open, and be back before dark.
  4. Visit the Kalam memorial the next morning before taking the afternoon train back.

Tamil Nadu Tourism recommends October to March as the best season. Amavasai days and weekends are the most crowded, so a midweek trip is easier with children or elderly parents.
