Booking tips and festival rush

Report to the conductor 15 minutes before departure and board only at the point on your ticket; the rules say a missed seat can be given to an unreserved passenger. Weekday travel is cheaper in sleepers because of SETC’s flexi rates. For Deepavali and Pongal, extra government buses run from Kilambakkam, but reserved seats on the far-south routes go first.

What this means for you

  • Go to Kilambakkam, not Koyambedu, for government buses to Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi.
  • Book Monday to Thursday to pay SETC’s lower weekday sleeper rate.
  • Budget 10 to 12 hours; do not plan a meeting at 7 am.
  • Check the drop point: private buses stop at several places in each town.
