A Chennai to Ooty bus is an overnight trip of about 573 km and 10.5 to 11.5 hours, almost all of it in private sleepers and seaters that leave Chennai in the evening. On the government side, the dependable route is an SETC bus to Coimbatore from Kilambakkam, then a local bus up the ghat via Mettupalayam and Coonoor.

Ooty sits at the top of the Nilgiris ghat, and that last climb shapes every bus plan. On 31 October 2026, redBus listed 23 daily Chennai to Ooty services from 13 operators, with the first leaving around 7.30 pm and an average journey of 11 hours 23 minutes. Fares shown ran from Rs 750 to just under Rs 4,000 by bus type.

SETC, the state’s long-distance corporation, lists Ooty among its reservation centres in its RTI handbook and keeps 55 ultra deluxe buses for ghat routes in its fleet table. But its current AC and sleeper service lists on tnstc.in show no Chennai to Ooty run, so check the portal for a direct ultra deluxe on your date and plan the two-step route as the fallback.

SETC and the via-Coimbatore route

Coimbatore buses are among the services the transport minister listed at Kilambakkam on 13 October 2026, DT Next reported, and tnstc.in names Coimbatore to Chennai Kilambakkam among SETC’s popular routes. SETC’s AC seater list shows evening departures to Coimbatore with an adult fare of Rs 663. In an ultra deluxe seater, the basic fare is set at 100 paise a km under the state’s fare table.

From Coimbatore, local government and private buses run to Mettupalayam at the foot of the hills and on up to Ooty. Some buses from Coimbatore go straight through to Ooty, which saves a change at Mettupalayam. Arriving early morning gives you daylight for the climb.

The road and the ghat section

A typical road route leaves Chennai on GST Road, turns west at Ulundurpet towards Attur and Salem, then follows the Salem to Coimbatore highway past Erode before swinging north to Mettupalayam. Operators vary the route, so treat the map as a guide, not a timetable. Night buses cover the plains in the dark and reach the foothills near dawn.

The climb from Mettupalayam to Coonoor and on to Ooty is a steep road with a long run of hairpin bends. Coonoor is about 19 km short of Ooty and Kotagiri, on the alternative road up, about 31 km away, according to the Nilgiris district website. If you get travel sick, take a front seat, eat lightly, and avoid an upper sleeper berth for this stretch. In heavy monsoon rain the ghat can see landslips and traffic holds, so allow slack in your plans.

It’s often said that every visitor needs an e-pass to enter Ooty.

The record shows The e-pass brought in under Madras High Court directions in May 2024 applied to vehicles at the Nilgiris check posts. Public transport and Nilgiris-registered vehicles were exempt, DT Next reported at the time. We could not confirm the scheme’s current terms on an official page today; if you drive or hire a cab, check epass.tnega.org before you leave. Bus passengers on public transport fell under that exemption.

Arriving in Ooty and the way back

Private operators on redBus list drop points at Aruvankadu, Charing Cross, the main bus stand and Yellanahalli, so you can get off before the town centre if your hotel is on the Coonoor side. For the return, the same evening private departures run to Chennai, and SETC seats from Coimbatore can be booked on tnstc.in. For a slower, scenic option between Mettupalayam and Ooty, the Nilgiri Mountain Railway runs on the same climb; seats sell out in season.
