GST Collections in Tamil Nadu, Month by Month: 2026-27

Gross GST in Tamil Nadu is down this year while the state's settled SGST is up. Official GSTN figures for 2026-27 and how to read them.

Tamil Nadu GST: down or up?

GST collected in Tamil Nadu came to ₹10,188 crore in September 2026, 5% lower than the ₹10,670 crore of September 2025, according to provisional GSTN data. Yet the state’s own GST revenue after settlement rose 17% in the same month, to ₹7,320 crore. Both numbers are correct; they simply measure different things.

This explainer sets out the official monthly figures for 2026-27 so far, what “pre-settlement” and “post-settlement” mean, and why the gap between them has become a political talking point in Chennai.

September 2026 at a glance

The GST Network’s monthly revenue report for September 2026 gives three Tamil Nadu figures that are often confused. All are provisional and in rupees crore.

Tamil Nadu measure Sep 2025 Sep 2026 Change
Domestic GST collected in the state (all components) 10,670 10,188 -5%
State GST before settlement 4,018 3,911 -3%
State GST after settlement 6,270 7,320 +17%

For the first half of the financial year, April to September 2026, pre-settlement SGST was ₹23,847 crore (down 2% from ₹24,362 crore), while post-settlement SGST was ₹44,266 crore (up 16% from ₹38,119 crore).

Pre-settlement vs post-settlement, in plain terms

  • Gross collection in the state is all GST paid by businesses registered in Tamil Nadu: central GST, state GST, integrated GST on inter-state sales, and cess.
  • Pre-settlement SGST is only the state GST portion collected directly within Tamil Nadu.
  • Post-settlement SGST adds the state’s share of integrated GST, which is paid on inter-state supplies and later apportioned to the state where goods or services are consumed.

State officials quoted by DT Next on 3 October 2026 argued that the post-settlement number is what the state actually receives, and that gross collections should not be read as the state’s GST revenue. Former Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu of the DMK criticised the fall in gross collections and questioned the TVK government’s handling of the economy. Officials attributed the softer gross figures to the GST rate rationalisation that took effect on 22 September 2025, which cut rates on several major categories from 28% to 18%.

Month by month in 2026-27

The same DT Next report listed the year-on-year change in Tamil Nadu’s gross collections for each month of the current financial year. The September and July rupee figures come from GSTN’s monthly reports.

Month (2026) Gross GST in Tamil Nadu Change vs same month of 2025
April Not listed here +4.4%
May Not listed here -15.1%
June Not listed here -1.9%
July ₹10,414 crore -1.2% (GSTN rounds to -1%)
August Not listed here -1.4%
September ₹10,188 crore -5%

The July 2026 report showed the same split: pre-settlement SGST for April to July down 2%, at ₹15,975 crore, while post-settlement SGST was up 18% to ₹29,659 crore.

How Tamil Nadu compares

The September report lists collections for every state. Among the larger economies, Tamil Nadu was the only one in this comparison to post a fall in gross collections.

State Sep 2025 (₹ crore) Sep 2026 (₹ crore) Change
Maharashtra 25,973 29,986 +15%
Karnataka 12,001 13,884 +16%
Gujarat 10,419 12,222 +17%
Tamil Nadu 10,670 10,188 -5%

On post-settlement SGST for September, Tamil Nadu’s 17% rise was ahead of Maharashtra (12%) and Karnataka (14%) but behind Gujarat (35%). Nationally, gross GST revenue in September 2026 was ₹2,03,521 crore, up 14.7%, and ₹12,46,278 crore for April to September, up 11.6%, as Business Today also reported.

How to check the figures yourself

  1. GSTN publishes a revenue report early each month on the GST tutorial site, covering the previous month. July’s national gross revenue, for instance, was ₹2,11,205 crore, up 15.4%.
  2. For state collections, open the state-wise table and find Tamil Nadu; compare the same month across two years, not consecutive months, because collections are seasonal.
  3. For the state’s actual revenue, use the SGST settlement table, which gives both pre- and post-settlement figures for the month and for the year to date.
  4. Remember that every figure is provisional and can change slightly when finalised.

Why it matters to Chennai

Chennai is home to many of the state’s largest GST registrants, from auto plants on its fringes to IT firms and wholesale traders in George Town, so the city’s business activity shapes much of the gross figure. Post-settlement SGST, meanwhile, is what funds state spending on schools, hospitals, transport and welfare schemes across the state. When reading a headline about “GST falling” or “GST rising”, check which of the three measures it means.

Businesses with questions about their own returns should consult a tax professional or the GST portal rather than rely on aggregate data.
