The boats to the Vivekananda Rock Memorial and the Thiruvalluvar statue run from 8 am to 4 pm, according to the Kanniyakumari district administration, and tickets can be booked online through the link on its page. Since 30 December 2024, a 77-metre glass bridge has connected the two rocks, so one boat ride now gets you to both monuments without a second ferry between them.
For Chennai travellers, the fastest train is the Vande Bharat from Egmore to Nagercoil. This guide covers the train, the ferry, the bridge, and the sea conditions that sometimes stop the boats without warning.
Getting there from Chennai
- Vande Bharat: the Railway Board’s introduction circular lists 20627 leaving Chennai Egmore at 5 am and reaching Nagercoil at 1.50 pm, with stops at Tambaram, Villupuram, Tiruchchirappalli, Dindigul, Madurai, Kovilpatti and Tirunelveli. It runs six days a week, not on Wednesdays. The return, 20628, leaves Nagercoil at 2.20 pm and reaches Egmore at 11 pm. Check current timings before booking.
- Overnight expresses: the district says daily trains link Kanniyakumari and Nagercoil Junction to cities across India. Tamil Nadu Tourism puts Nagercoil Junction about 17 km from Kanyakumari town.
- Bus: Tamil Nadu Tourism lists buses from Chennai to the Kanyakumari bus stand at Puthugramam. Nagercoil’s Vadasery bus stand is about 21 km away.
- Air: Thiruvananthapuram is the nearest airport. Tamil Nadu Tourism gives the distance as 76 km; the district page says about 110 km. Thoothukudi has a smaller airport.
The ferry to the rocks
The Tamil Nadu Maritime Board says the ferry between the Kanyakumari jetty and the two monuments is run by Poompuhar Shipping Corporation, a state government undertaking. The district describes the memorial rock as about 500 metres east of the Vavathurai mainland.
- Book a slot online through the district page link, or buy at the jetty counter.
- Reach the jetty early. Queues in December and January can stretch for hours by mid-morning.
- Life jackets are handed out on board. Keep children seated.
- From the rock, walk across the glass bridge to the statue, then take the return boat from there.
Fares are not listed on the district or maritime board pages; check at the counter or the booking link. For queries, the port conservator’s office is on 04652-248270, per the maritime board.
When the boats stop: the sea here can change quickly. On 2 August 2026, ferries were paused when an unusual low tide pulled the water back from the shore, DT Next reported, because officials feared boats could hit submerged rocks. Strong winds and high waves in the monsoon cause similar suspensions. Keep a flexible half day in your plan so you can try again the next morning if the boats are not running.
The glass bridge
All India Radio reported that the then Chief Minister opened the bridge on 30 December 2024 to mark the silver jubilee of the 133-foot Thiruvalluvar statue. It is 77 metres long and cost Rs 37 crore. WION gave its width as 10 metres and described a bowstring-arch design built to resist salt air. Before it existed, a visitor wanting both monuments needed separate boats.
Walking on the glass is safe, but it gets hot in the afternoon sun and slippery in rain. Footwear rules at the memorial are set on site; follow the staff.
On the mainland
Tamil Nadu Tourism notes that Kanyakumari is the only spot in India where you can watch the sunset and moonrise together on full moon days, and that Chithra Pournami is the grandest of these evenings. Sunrise over the sea draws a crowd at the shore every morning. The town’s temple of Kumari Amman, the shoreline memorials and the market lanes fill the rest of a day.
Tamil Nadu Tourism recommends November to March, when it is cooler. With the northeast monsoon under way since 15 October 2026, expect showers and the occasional ferry suspension until December.
A two-day plan
- Day 1: morning Vande Bharat from Egmore, check in by late afternoon, sunset at the shore.
- Day 2: sunrise, early boat to the rock memorial at 8 am, glass bridge, statue, back on the mainland by noon. Take the 2.20 pm Vande Bharat back from Nagercoil, or stay another night.
