Two weeks into the northeast monsoon, Chennai has already had one cloudburst-scale night: 36 cm at Parrys Corner on 17 to 18 October 2026 and waterlogging at 35 places. Here is what fell, what the Corporation has said it has ready, and how this season compares with the normal for the city.
The numbers
The India Meteorological Department declared the onset of the northeast monsoon over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal on 15 October 2026, the same day the southwest monsoon withdrew from the whole country, according to its press release of 15 October. That is five days ahead of the normal onset date of 20 October for coastal Tamil Nadu given in IMD Chennai’s report on the 2025 season.
The first heavy spell hit north Chennai on the night of Saturday 17 October. Parrys Corner recorded 36 cm, Kathivakkam 34 cm and Manali and Ennore 21 cm each, with 6 to 10 cm falling in under an hour in parts of north Chennai, as reported by ThePrint (PTI) on 18 October. Waterlogging was reported at 35 locations.
What the night of 17 October showed
The worst-hit stretches were in the north and in older low-lying pockets: the Vaidyanathan flyover area in Tondiarpet, streets in Vyasarpadi, Glass Factory Road in Tiruvottiyur, and AGS Colony in Velachery, which flooded up to about three feet before the water drained, DT Next reported on 19 October. Motor pumps cleared standing water at all 35 spots, fallen trees were removed at 22 locations, and 22 subways were pumped out.

According to DT Next, the Corporation has 227 relief camps and 112 central kitchens ready, and it served meals to 13,500 people that Sunday.
The Chief Minister told officials to inspect areas with a history of waterlogging, speed up preventive work and keep departments coordinated for further heavy rain, ThePrint (PTI) reported. The control room was asked to act at once on public complaints. Public Works Minister Aadhav Arjuna is leading mitigation and relief work.

What the first spell tells us
One very wet night does not make a wet season. The 2026 seasonal total is still being counted, and the season has more than two months to run. What the 17 October spell did show is how quickly short, intense bursts overwhelm drains in the older northern wards, even before the reservoirs and rivers come into play.
It’s often said Chennai floods only when a cyclone crosses the coast.
The record shows The 17 October spell came from an upper-air cyclonic circulation and a trough, not a cyclone, as ThePrint (PTI) reported. It still put 36 cm on Parrys Corner in one night.
What this means for you
- Report waterlogging, fallen trees and blocked drains to the Corporation’s 1913 helpline or the Namma Chennai app, with a photo and exact location.
- If you live in a low-lying street in the north or in Velachery, keep documents, medicines and a phone charger in a waterproof bag on a high shelf.
- Ask your ward office where the nearest relief camp is before you need it.
- Avoid subways and underpasses during heavy rain even after pumping, as water can return quickly.
- Follow IMD and Regional Meteorological Centre Chennai bulletins for colour-coded alerts rather than forwarded messages.
