Government buses from Chennai to Salem start at Kilambakkam (KCBT) and run via Tindivanam, Villupuram, Ulundurpet and Attur, a road trip of about 344 km that operators list at six hours 40 minutes to a little over seven hours. An ultra deluxe seat costs about Rs 344 at the state’s per-km rate, before tolls.
The numbers
The Chennai to Salem bus is one of the busiest overnight routes out of the city. The official booking site tnstc.in names “Chennai Kilambakkam KCBT to Salem” among its popular routes, and SETC lists Salem in the first set of cities to get its new Volvo multi-axle AC semi-sleeper coaches. Private omni buses pick up across Chennai and drop at several points around Salem.
The route question matters more here than for most destinations, because there are two sensible roads. This guide sets out which one the government buses use, what the classes cost, and where you get off. Figures come from the Transport Department’s fare table and the booking pages we opened on 31 October 2026.
Where to board the Chennai to Salem bus
Kilambakkam on GST Road is the starting point for SETC and TNSTC Salem services. During the Aayudha Pooja rush this month, DT Next’s boarding guide put Salem in the Kilambakkam list and noted the buses run via Tindivanam. On ordinary days the same applies, and buses usually pick up again along GST Road at places such as Perungalathur and Vandalur, so check the list when you book.
From the city, MTC route 170A runs from Madhavaram through Koyambedu, the airport, Tambaram and Perungalathur to Vandalur Zoo, near the terminus, and 21G covers Broadway to Tambaram via Guindy. Gaps on those pages are averages from MTC route data and may be out of date; check live timings before travelling.
It’s often said Salem buses leave from Koyambedu because Salem is to the west.
The record shows Government services to Salem are listed from Kilambakkam on tnstc.in, and the October 2026 special-bus guides put Salem in the Kilambakkam group, running via Tindivanam. Koyambedu, which the CMDA says handles about 2,000 mofussil buses a day, serves the Vellore, Hosur and Bengaluru side.
The route: via Ulundurpet and Attur
Government buses head down GST Road to Tindivanam and Villupuram, carry on to Ulundurpet, then turn west through Chinnasalem and Attur to enter Salem from the east. The other road, out along the Bengaluru highway past Vellore and Krishnagiri and then south, is used by some private coaches. The drop points listed on redBus show both approaches: Attur and Ayodhiyapattinam on the eastern side, and Mallur on the northern side.

Bus operators listed for Chennai to Salem on redBus on 31 October 2026, with the first departure after midnight and the last just before it.
Bus classes and fares to Salem
The state fixes mofussil fares per kilometre. The rates in the Transport Policy Note 2025-26 date from 29 January 2018, with peak and lean rates for AC and sleeper classes. Applied to 344 km, they give these base fares. Your ticket adds tolls and reservation charges, so treat the figures as a guide and check the exact fare at booking.
| Class | Rate per km | Base fare for 344 km (approx.) |
|---|---|---|
| Ultra deluxe | 100 paise | Rs 344 |
| AC seater | 110 to 130 paise | Rs 378 to Rs 447 |
| Non-AC sleeper | 135 to 155 paise | Rs 464 to Rs 533 |
| AC sleeper | 180 to 200 paise | Rs 619 to Rs 688 |
Source: Tamil Nadu Transport Department, Policy Note 2025-26, mofussil fare table (rates in force since 29 January 2018). Base fares are simple arithmetic: rate per km multiplied by the 344 km route distance listed on redBus; tickets add tolls and reservation charges.
Private fares vary more. On 31 October 2026, redBus listed 381 direct buses from 136 operators, with fares from about Rs 320 at the cheapest and operator journey times from 6 hours 40 minutes to 7 hours 22 minutes. AC sleepers in the evening fill first on Fridays.
Book government seats on tnstc.in, the TNSTC app, or on WhatsApp at 9444018898, as the booking site advertises. The form has a “Single Lady” option for women travelling alone. The policy note says advance booking opens 90 days ahead and the toll-free 149 number takes complaints for all state transport undertakings.
Arriving in Salem
TNSTC Salem, which the policy note says runs about 1,900 services from 32 depots, operates the town and district buses you will use for the last leg. Government buses from Chennai end at the main Salem bus stand. Private buses can set you down earlier, at Ayodhiyapattinam or the bypass, which helps if you live on that side of the city; the full drop list is on each operator’s booking page.
Weekend and festival specials
Salem is a regular on the special-bus lists. For the Mahalaya Amavasai weekend this October, Kilambakkam ran 1,075 buses on the Friday and 845 on the Saturday to destinations that included Salem, Erode and Tirupur, DT Next reported. Specials appear on tnstc.in a few days ahead, so check early for long weekends.
